Top 5 Tips for Creating a Writing Space

Since I have newly started writing seriously, and for people other than myself, I have been trying out different writing spaces in our home. With a house full of laughing, bickering, screaming children that like to bang toys around, it has been a journey.

I first started in our office with my husband. But with him constantly on the computer, in and out of the room and conference calling, I could hardly distinguish my own thoughts from his actions. That led me to unplugging the power cord and shamelessly walking to our master bedroom and setting up my station at my jewelry armoire. That thing is just like a desk! It was perfect! Then I started to not sleep well at night.  Then I remembered reading in a Feng Shui book that an working space should not be set up in a bedroom where you sleep. Plus, the children harassed me in there. They would go on the patio to our bedroom slider door and make funny faces, show off on their scooters and lick the window. At last I set up shop at the kids' desk in our guest bedroom. Which is where I sit and type right now. It is working okay. I am right next to their rooms, which can be distracting since I write while they nap and I can hear every whimper.  Through my process I learned a few things which I will share. It is not genius, just common sense :)

Quiet Space
At least a somewhat quiet space. In the living room or the kitchen where most of the action happens would not work well for me. A place where you can get away and shut the door when needed. A place where people know you are writing.

Consistent Space
Moving around your computer from one spot to the next will not help in training your brain to know it is time to get down to business. By having a consistent spot you train your brain that this is the place and the time to write. It is much easier to get started.

A Steady Surface
For the longest time (uh hum, high school, college and even after) I would never write or study at a desk or table. I was on the floor, on the sofa or my bed. I thought it was silly to sit at a desk. I have found that I am much more productive when I actually sit in a chair and have my computer on a table or desk. It is creating a firm foundation, literally, and that translates to the efficiency of your writing.

Conquer Clutter
A clutter free zone allows creativity and productivity to occur. Use a desk with drawers to hide "stuff" or use baskets or bins under your table to keep cords, papers, notebooks and such. As writers, we tend to read a lot. I always have a ton of books around me and they pile up. I need to put them away before I start. I also keep my notebook of ideas stashed away too. A free and clear desk equals a free and clear mind that can get ready to write some awesome dialogue :)

Decorate with Inspiration
I haven't done this yet but I want to get a cork board to keep above my desk. I have notes I have already started to write to myself; some writing tips, inspirational quotes, and reminders (Write 1,000 words a day). So, when I feel discouraged I can look up and feel encouraged or remember my goals. I think I will write one that says, "You are AWESOME! You've GOT this!"

There you have it. Some simple tips from a newbie writer. I look forward to sharing my progress of learning the art of writing, blogging, living in this crazy world of technology, and perhaps even some random home made videos.
I will finish with:

YOU are Awsome! You've GOT this!!
